PRELIM - Final Cut Pro - Process of making.

This is our final edited copy of our preliminary opening sequence. There are elements that show potential and professional aspects, especially the camera shots. We thought that the match cut we used was especially successful as it showed continuity. Also, the shot reverse shot at the end between Eniola and Lyah was professionally shot as it didn't have any jump cuts.

However, there are aspects which needs to be re-considered when we come to film our final opening thriller. This includes the jump cut of Eniola in the middle of the sequence. The positioning of the camera was changed and this made the sequence look unprofessional.

These are screen grabs that show our process of making using soundtrack pro. We used sounds to enhance some of the movements in the sequence. For example, we used a bone breaking sound to emphasis the scene where Eniola was grabbing Lyah's neck.

Inspiration - Peeping Tom

This is the opening of a psychological thriller from 1960 called 'Peeping Tom'. This has inspired us in many ways especially the camera shots that are present in the movie. Also, the movie is basically about a man who 'peeps' at woman and kills them whilst filming their facial expression. We have decided to incorporate the idea of 'peeping' into our own thriller opening. As a result we have decided to film a part of our opening at a location where there is a hole in the wall and someone 'peeping' through.
Here is the conventional title sequence for the opening of a film;

-Production Company ident/logo
-Production Company (as part of sequence)
-Other Production Companies
-Distributors
-(Famous Actors)
-Film Title
-Actors/Cast
-Casting
-Costume
-Music Supervisor
-Music
-Edited By
-Production Designer
-Exec Producers
-Exec producers
-Director

When we had to look at the conventions for openings of films I realise that  where actors came in the sequence depended on how well there are known by the audience, I think this is done to wheel in the audience cause once the audience knows that their favourite  actors are in the movie they will be interested. Also I have noticed that most titles mirror the idea of the film. I think because we are doing thriller most people might put their title in red or have it looking scary.

Analysis of previous student's work.

The opening that I thought effectively delivered the elements of mise en scene, sound, editing and camera was 'Rex with no name'. Throughout the opening, many match cuts were used. They were effective because they were filmed smoothly. Editing also contributes to the smooth match cuts because this makes the the footage more professional. Also, with editing, this includes the use of sound. In 'Rex with no name' the use of sounds were used significantly to emphasise the emotions of the character. For example, the heart beat used creates the atmosphere for the audience and this builds up the tension.

Moreover, the use of prop was evidently considered carefully as it was well chosen and suited to the opening as well. This adds realism to the opening and acts as a clue to what might happen in the following sequence.
Here's an example of the documents that were shown in the opening which I thought effectively enhanced the audience's knowledge on the situation.

Another aspect that made the opening successful are the camera shots in which the opening used. This includes high angle shots, low angle shots, close ups and many more. Varying the shot types engages the audience and this means that it is more interesting for them to watch. All of the initial shots shown in the beginning of the sequence are different. I particularly like the shots that show the mouth of the man in the telephone box then it shows him again from the back in a high angle shot because it shows the anonymity of the character as he is slowly revealed to the audience.

Prelim Storyboard & Editing Animation =S

Here is the images that we took while making our storyboard to are prelim and the animation to it. Altogether there were 17 shots and we had to use a match cut, shot/reverse shot and 180 degree rule. We think that this started to really help us understand how the planning stages will work when we start planning our final piece. The genre to this was thriller/supernatural, the scene was between two people and one of them had supernatural powers.

Process of making.

These three images show our process of making in Final Cut Pro. As a group, we were asked to put a clip together in the correct order and then edit it buy adding text to show the order of a title sequence which includes the production companies, actors, film titles and etc. However, due to a shortage of time, we were only able to include some parts of the title sequence. We chose the font Ariel because this is a conventional font that thriller movies use. Also, this would make our title sequence look more professional. To make the sequence flow we added effects so that the writing will fade in and fade out in order to make it look smooth. Also after we made the title sequence we were able to go on to Soundtrack Pro and found a 'screeching tires' sound which we were not able to add due to time but this gave a very tense effect.

Foley sounds Final

This is our final video that we have produced from final cut pro which shows how the use of foley sounds have been included. We as a group are really pleased with the outcome as the sound adds another dimension to the opening. Inspired by the song This Woman's Work by Kate Bush which is also used in the NSPCC advert. We also made our own breathing sound which we included in the opening.

Sherlock Holmes

Over the weekend, I went to see Sherlock Holmes in the cinemas. This was really inspiring for many reasons. The editing aspect of mise en scene was particularly effective in emphasising some important parts of the movie. Slow motions were used a lot to show the action and fight scenes in the movie. This is a good technique because it slows down the action so that the audience can actually see what is happening. Also, it shows the facial expressions of the characters which emphasises their emotions.

Sherlock Holmes is a great inspiration is showing how editing can be used effectively to create a certain atmosphere. As a group, we will be considering how to incorporate editing in our own opening so that it can be effective.

Inspiration =D

The film Transformers uses a lot of editing as some of the main character being 'the transformers which are called autobots are actually vehicles. They look like common vehicles like trucks, cars and motor bikes and even helicopters which turn in to robots to help save the world. At the beginning there is a very comical scene with Sam the main character who is getting ready to leave for college and his autobot Bubblebee. Bubblebee doesn't understand that he can't go and as they talk through the radio he has 'I'm so excited' playing but then gets told he isn't coming and starts crying and water comes out that would clean the wind shield. This is one of the funniest scenes in the whole movie. There are lot of famous actors in this which gave it a lot of publicity, and they had a big box office.

Inspiration =p

In class we did a lesson about what films people like and it turned out that people from the UK prefer films that are American and I personally do agree but a film that is British that a lot of people enjoyed was Sherlock Holmes who was played by Robert Downey Jr and Dr Watson was played by our very own Jude Law. Robert is a very well known American actor and Jude Law is also well known so having these two actors brought a lot of wanted publicity around the film and got a lot of people to the cinemas. Also its set in the 1900's which people nowadays are into more of the future than the past and yet everyone is so intrigued by this film. In this film when there are fighting scenes which involve Sherlock they have the scenes in slow motion with his voice explaining his combat.

Target audience

Evidiently, each genre of films are targeted at a specific target audience whether it is for children, teenagers, adults or everyone. The most popular genre has been considered as comedy. This is because comedy will appeal to everyone and therefore it is the most successful. The most well known genres of films are comedy, romance, horror, action, mystery, animation and thriller.

The Meet the Parents trilogy is one of the most successful comedy films. The target audience for this movie is a 12A as some reference to sex and drugs are made. It is obvious that this is a comedy for various reasons. The image used on the poster shows some sort of humour would be invovled adn by looking at the actors in the movie, you can imediately tell that it would be a comedy.

Titanic is one of the most well known, popular and loved films of all time. Again, the poster expresses so much information to the genre and target audience of the movie. It is evident that Titanic is a romance movie because of the two main characters who are close together on the poster. Also, the target audience for this would be aimed at everybody.

There are many horror movies which has been created over the years. However, the Saw series have been a big success because of its gore and mysterious plots. The target audience for this is a 18 because of its horrific and gruesome scenes. Also, I believe that many teenagers would be into this becuase of it's gory graphics. This may appeal to males more thatn females.

The Fast and Furious movies are classified as action movies. We can clearly see this by the poster. The car in the poster and hte characters starred in the movies suggest this. The target audience for this movie would be for mostly teenagers and some adults from the ages of 14/15 and above. This would mostly appeal to males because it is about racing.

Sherlock Holmes is a mystery film. This can be seen by the poster and the name of the title. It says 'a game of shadows'. This evidently suggest that the movie will require us to figure things out and have to put the pieces of the puzzle together. The target audience for this would be for teenagers and adults. I believe that this may appeal to adults more because of the complexity of the film. However, this can be for 16 year olds and above.

Alvin and The Chipmunks is also a trilogy. As you can see, this is an animated movie. The target audience for this is usually for children. However, this is also a family film.

This can be considered as a psychological thriller because it requires the audience to think about the plot of the movie and try out figure out the questions that arise during the film. The target audience for this movie would be for teenagers of 16 and above and for adults too.
Depending on the genre and sub-genre of each movie, the target audience varies because of the difference in interests for each individual.

Ideas > Arlington Road

For the remake of the Arlington Road title sequence my group decided to add a piece of music to it called Kate Bush-This Women's Work. This song is used for the NSPCC advert and it is very eery and emotional. As the opening has a little boy walking down a road and he is obviously hurt we thought it was a good idea to add that especially when the man gets out of the car and starts shouting 'help' for the little boy. As a group we felt this gave us a chill as you hear this spin chilling piece of music and see the scene in front of you, the way the man is shouting really makes you choke up. We think that it gave the opening an extra 'umph' that really connects to the audience, as there is a child involved which always pulls on people heart strings especially females. Here is the song below.

Genre and subgenre

The term genre basically means what category a certain film falls into. There are many genres such as romance, thriller, action, adventure, fantasy, horror and etc. However, some films have subgenres. This just means that the film itself falls into one or more of the many categories. This can be romantic comedies, horror thrillers, psychological thriller and many more.

Within thriller itself, there are already many types of subgenres. Some examples of these may be crime thrillers, psychological thrillers, mystery thrillers, political thrillers, supernatural thrillers, horror thrillers and many more. The thirller sub-genre that inspires me the most is supernatural/horror thrillers. As well as the thrilling aspect of the film itself, including horror and supernatural apparitions would deepen the intensity of the build up of tension and suspense. This is really successful in creating anxiety for the audience.

Genre / Sub-genre: Horror/supernatural thriller.

This is the poster that was used to advertise The Eye. Posters is an effective and essential way to express the genre and content of the movie. The poster used here has effectively depicted the horror and thriller aspect of the movie. Clearly the title of the film has been portrayed with the use of the picture of an eye. The use of the hand inside the eye makes this poster even more thrilling,

Target Audience <>

Target Audiences are used so that people at specific ages only watch things that are appropriate for them.

Animation and family are more suited to children and families even though everyone can watch them, they  are more appropriate for children. Like Shrek which involves all different fair tale characters that children can relate too. The posters colours are very bright and in this case green because Shrek is a green ogre.

Comedy can vary in age as some can have a lot of adult humour in them which then makes them inappropriate for children. An adult comedy is The Hangover which has a lot of strong language and nudity throughout the film. The poster has three men looking very worse for wear, there clothes are dirty and one guy has lost a tooth, one has got a baby and the other just looks pure confused. Then there is a comedy for everyone like Daddy Day Camp which has a lot of childish humour which keeps them occupied. The poster has the main character laying on the floor like he is dragged away by the kid campers.

Action is more for adults and teenagers (stereotypically more boys than girls). This has a lot more violence that is only appropriate for teens upwards. Like the Mission Impossible Franchise they have a lot of violence, strong language and heated romance. The posters are all similar as they only have Tom Cruise on all of them. The first 3 have just his face with different backgrounds that link to that movie, the first one has a globe in the background as he has to travel the world. In the second one there is a big explosion of fire in the background just like in the film. The third has what looks like an encryption on a device in the background and in the film there are encryptions that get put into people. The fourth one has Tom Cruise and 3 other people that look like his team and its very blurred by what looks like sand and in the film there is a sand storm.

Horror is also more for adults and teenagers, as there is a lot of gore and violence. Like the Scream Franchise as they have all the gore and death but also the mystery as you don't know who scream actually is. The poster has a person dressed in all black with the scream mask on with a big dagger. Also the word scream is in white with a red glow around it which gives an eery feel.

Sci-fi is more for young adults and teenage boys and sometimes girls, as it can be less exciting than normal action films, I also think it depends on actors in the film as Star Trek because Chris Pine is the main character and a lot of people (girls) really like him. The poster has three people close up and then a spaceship below them showing the sci-fi element.

Adventure movies can be for the family but more for teenagers, like The Mummy they travel to Egypt and have to fight off a mummy and his dead army. The poster has the two main characters at the front wearing clothes from back in the day and has a gun while an army are coming up behind them. As its set in Egypt they have Egyptian encryptions in the background.

Drama is for adults and teenager like The Adjustment Bureau that has a lot more story telling and chemistry between characters. The poster has buildings which shadows on them and and two people are running away.

Rom-Com is more for teenage girl and women as it can be all lovey dovey but have a humour that you just want to sit with chocolates and ice-cream. Like Along Came Polly, which has Jennifer Anniston and Ben Stiller which add to the element of comedy. The poster has the couple walking together and they are also walking a dog together which makes them look even more in love and romantic.

Thriller is more adults and young adults like The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo which has the main elements  of suspense which is crutial in a thriller. The poster is covered in black but has a girl on the front with a dragon tattoo across her face which has mystery and a sense of thrill behind it.

Genre & Sub Genre .x

Genre is used in films, this is so there are categories because people have different likes and dislikes and this way it is easier for people to decide on what film they would like to see by the genre. There are also sub genres which gives more information on the film, they are still genres thought but not the main one but are included in the film.

Fair Game:
Genre: Thriller
Sub Genre: Drama
Age Cert: 12A
The poster to Fair Game shows us it has something to do with government as it has the organisations emblem in the background image (C.I.A) therefore telling the audience that there is going to be action involved. There are two people on the front which we would assume are the main characters in the film, one is a man who is further back to the side and then there is a women who is closer and standing straight on which can show she has more power or is of more importance. They are both dressed very formal which can also show that they are in a very important job. The title is big and bold it stands out as fair is shown in white and game is shown in read which leads the audience to believing that word holds some sort of significance.

The Others:
Genre: Drama
Sub Genre: Thriller, Mystery
Age Cert: 12A
The poster to The Others shows a close up of Nicole Kidman's face which only takes up half the poster as the other half is covered in black. Also the look on Nicole's face is of pure fear that is somewhere in the darkness. Also as she is the only person on the poster it shows the audience she is the main character. The font of the title is blurred which to me adds a sense of mystery and it is also glowing which shows it could be something supernatural like ghosts as they are associated which a white glow.

In Time:
Genre: Action
Sub Genre: Thriller, Sci-fi and Romance
Age Cert: 15
The poster to In Time shows Justin Timberlake and Amanda Seyfriend are on the cover which can attract audiences that like them actors. Also they are very close together and very close up on the poster which shows an intimate connection between the two but also that they must be the main characters. On their arms are numbers which comes back to the title that they have their own time imprinted on them. Also the title is written in big and bold as its in a contrasting colour to the background and on the 'E' it was green just like the time on their arms. The audience would see this connection to sci-fi.

Tower Heist:
Genre: Comedy
Sub Genre: Action
Age Cert: 12
The poster to Tower Heist shows Ben Stiller and Eddie Murphy which show us its going to be comedy as they are in a lot of comedy. They are on top of a building which can show there may be something to do with theft also because of the title 'Heist' and cause they are wearing black which suggests theft.. They are standing on top of a building with other people but behind them you can see other buildings behind them. The font for the title is just big and bold again but has blue fade into black which has a sense of mystery.

Harry Potter: Deathly Hallows Part 1
Genre: Fantasy
Sub Genre: Adventure, Drama
Age Cert: 12A
The poster to Harry Potter: Deathly Hallows Part 1 shows the main characters running which through the woods which give it a fantasy, adventure feel to the film. People will know from the name Harry Potter that its to do with magic and wizardry. The font for the title looks like lighting bolts just like Harry Potter has on his forehead. There is a bright light that seems to glow around the main character which can show the importance of them to the audience but also other than that light its very dark which adds that sense of danger of not knowing.

Friends With Benefits:
Genre: Romance
Sub Genre: Comedy
Age Cert: 15
The poster to Friends With Benefits shows Justin Timberlake and Mila Kunis which suggests they are the main characters. The body language between the both of them is very flirty, as Mila has her hand up to her face and is smiling but also that her eyes look as though they are looking straight at you. Justin has a cheeky look on his face as he looks as if he is looking at Mila through the title. The title is positioned between them almost like a wall that friends don't want to break through. Also the first letter of each word is blue which give the initials F.W.B.

Target Audiences

There are many different genres of film which appear to generally particular types of audience and is only avaliable to certain age certificates, for example:
Family - Parents and children
Action - Men, Women, Young Adults, Teenage Boys
Comedy - Everyone
Animation - Children
Horror - Adults, Young Adults, Teenagers
Sci-Fi - Teenager Boys, Young Adults
Adventure - Teenagers, Children
Drama - Young Adults, Adults, Teenagers
RomCom - Women, Young Females, Teenage Girls
Thriller - Adults, Young Adults

Only few film genres are constantly targeted at a particular audience and are consistent in keeping the age certificate the same which is Family and Animation genres. Other film genres vary all the time depending on the film itself. A film poster is meant to allow the target audience to recognise that the film is aimed at them and lure them into watching the film in movie theatres.
Generically, comedy is the worlds most favourite and most successful genre as it is able to variate in different sub-genres appealing to a wide range of audiences.

This movie poster tells us the genre is animation as the the poster itself is an animation and that its target audience will be children of any gender and all ages. It seems like its age certificate would be a U.

This movie poster tells us that this film is a family genre and will appeal to adults and children, and its age certificate would be a PG.

This film poster tells us that this film is a horror and would appeal to young adults, adults and teenagers, and its age certificate would be a 15.

All the films shown are of the genre comedy, however each of them individually have different target audiences and different age certificates. This is because each vary in material used such as violence, strong language, scenes of a sexual nature and drug use which can define a films sub genre, and also be the distinction between age certificates 12A and a 15.
The film Due Date is a comedy drama, which has an age certificate of 15; therefore its target audience would be young adults, adults and teenagers.
The film Hall Pass is a comedy romance which has an age certificate of 15; therefore it would also appeal to women, young adult and adults.
The film Bridesmaids is also a comedy romance with an age certificate of 15; therefore would also appeal to the same audience as Hall Pass.
The film Big Mommas: Like Father Like son is a comedy and has an age certificate of PG; therefore its target audience would be for everyone, as long as there is parental guidance for those under the age of 12.
Finally, the film Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Rodrick Rules is a family comedy with the age certificate of U; therefore its target audience is those of all ages, specifically families.

This film Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol is an action genre with sub genres thriller and adventure, with the age certificate 12A. This tells us that its target audience is both men and women, young adults and teenagers and also 12 year olds whom are accompanied by a parent.
