Inspiration - The Turn of the Screw

In English, our class was shown the movie called 'The Turn of the Screw' by Henry James. This film was particularly successful in meeting the conventions of a thriller. The movie is about the interaction between human and apparitions and in this movie children are also used as two of the main protagonists.

The Turn of the Screw makes a successful thriller with the use of mainly sound and editing. For example, in this particular sequence, as the governess - Anne- is guided through the door by the girl named Flora, spooky music is used to create suspense and this allows tension to build up gradually. As a viewer, when I watched this, I began to feel anxious to what I would see next. Along with the music, the use of prop was strategically considered here. We are shown the surroundings through Anne's point of view. However, we see through the blindfold too and this means that as the audience, our vision is also restricted and blurred. I thought that this was very effective as it allowed the audience to think about the upcoming events of the movie and it engages the audience without giving away too much of the plot. Therefore, for our movie opening, I will be considering the use of prop and how that can play a significant role in creating tension and suspense.
