Genre and Sub-Genre

A genre is a category a film is put in based on the similarities of the narrative elements from which films are constructed. The film genre can be easily identified by its poster.
A genre can also be further categorized into sub-genres which is the genre itself however with a distinctive style and subject matter.

Genre: Thriller
Sub-Genre(s): Drama
Age Certificate: 15
Many factors from this film poster has lead me to this result, the main one being the Mise en Scene. The two people on the cover suggest they are our main characters the woman being the most important as the is positioned in front of the man. The facial expressions on both characters suggest they are in a serious mood, and the woman appears to be focusing on something out of the cameras range. They both seem to be wearing business like, formal clothing which suggests they are of an academic profession.
There are words across the poster in the format of a stamp 'central intelligence'. As the stamp isn't fully shown, a suggestion of what a word may be missing is 'agency' which creates the impression the two people on the front, work for the CIA.
The font the title is in is very basic and clear in colours white and red. As the word 'game' and the films slogan 'wife. mother. spy.' is in the colour red, differing from the rest of the title, it implies that the woman's game is significant in the film, which is to play all three roles of being a wife, a mother, and a spy.

Genre: Drama
Sub-Genre(s): Mystery, Thriller
Age Certificate: 12/15
Factors of this film poster that has lead me to this result is the overall layout and the star Nicole Kidman. This poster is presented with a very dark background as if something has been cast out of the light for a reason. However, the star has bright yellow coloured lighting shone on herself which could symbolise her being an outcast maybe. Her facial expressions appears to be as if she is watching someone/something very closely and suspiciously and almost looks as if she is frightened which creates a mysterious tone.
The font of the titles is all in capital letters and in white with a gold coloured glow. This could imply that the others may be aliens as glows are usually associated with aliens.
As a result, this poster hasn't made obvious what the plot of the film is about, however has given the target audience to create their own ideas about the film which creates a sense of mystery.
Genre: Action
Sub-Genre(s): Romance, Sci-Fi, Thriller
Age Certificate: 15
The obvious prop used in this movie poster which suggests the genre is action is the gun held by the woman. Guns are generically associated with action films as they create violence and threat. The sub genre sci-fi is created under the impression that the star Justin Timberlake appears to have green numbers embedded in his left arm which suggests there is something futuristic or generally not real in this film. The intimacy between both characters shown gives the impression that a sub genre may also be romance as their facial expressions are both looking deep into each others eyes.
The font of the title is again very basic, which many thrillers are and also in capital letters. This may imply that the film is structured in an organised and straight forward manner and is the poster is an exact reflection of the film.
Genre: Comedy
Sub-Genre(s): Action
Age Certificate: 12
To begin with, the genre of this film poster implies it is a comedy by the cast shown, Ben Stiller and Eddie Murphy. As these two actors are best known for their comical characters, it suggests that they will also play a comical character in this film.
The mise en scene however suggests that its sub genre is action as the location of where they all seem to be standing on is on top of a building, over looking many other buildings which appears to be in a city. There is bright naturalistic lighting used on this film poster which suggests the film is realistic.
The font on this poster again is very basic but the lettering is quite tall which can reflect the word Tower as that also is very tall.

Genre: Adventure
Sub-Genre(s): Fantasy, Drama
Age Certificate: 12A
The movie poster for Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 1 show generic factors of a Adventure/Fantasy film. The mise en scene heavily creates this impression as the setting the three main characters are running through are the woods/forest. Generically forests create the impression of mystery, adventure, discovery and freedom which help us establish what the film may be about or where it is set.
A bluish greyish coloured lighting is used which creates a mystical and magical tone to the poster. To enhance this lighting, nearer the bottom of the poster where the title is shown are variations of different sized red dots with slight red glows; this too creates a magical and mystical tone.
The font of the title itself has been created in a 3D effect that almost looks like stone. It also has shadowing on each of the letters, of which the font looks very traditional with an acient/spooky effect.

Genre: Romance
Sub-Genre(s): Comedy
Age Certificate: 15
Factors of this movie poster Friends With Benefits which help generate the idea of these genres is by the mise en scene and the layout of this poster. Both characters are visible with the help of the bright naturalistic lighting. The male character is dressed in an untidy shirt with a loosened tie. The female character is dressed very neatly with her hair slicked back. Judging by the quirky and mischievous facial expression on the male, and the flirtatious facial expression on the female, it portrays a sense of lust/romance which reflects the films title.
